Student Voices in Mexico!!

Hey guys! Well, once again has Student Voices lived up to its purpose! Last May 25th, Student Voices held another panel in which students from Mexico and the United States got to speak their minds on topics of concern. This time, the panel took place in Monterrey Mexico at the Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores (or more popularly known as el TEC). The event went great! This time, there were a lot student leaders from school organizations, including some from the student government at TEC.

Again, there were five panelists: Eduardo Vazquez Serna (TEC), Daniela Tellechea Topete (TEC), Edgar Mendieta (UNAM), Zach Osborne (a West Point Academy student studying at TEC), and myself, Humberto A. Gonzalez (University of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio).
This event sparked in me the need to communicate this message of “thinking together.”

For years and years, both the United States and Mexico have maintained a good relationship as neighboring countries. I believe the time to test this relationship has come. Both our nations must look beyond the fear of loosing their autonomy in order to effectively solve pressing issues. I believe this will only be done when we realize that by helping one another, we actually help ourselves. Take the matter of immigration for example, one of the hottest topics involving the two countries. When talking about immigration from the U.S. perspective, there are a few topics that come to mind: control and accountability, taxes, medical services, schooling and loss of jobs. When looking at it from Mexico’s perspective we find that the most prevailing matter is that there are either jobs that don’t pay enough or no jobs at all. We need not go into too much detail to see that we can reach a common ground; we can reach a place where both the U.S. and Mexico can win!

Well guys with this I say goodbye and until next time. Keep involved!!!
