Solis ready to take over Dept. of Labor
Read the full profile of the incoming Secretary of Labor, Hilda Solis, brought to you by Politico, at the link below. Here's a preview: "The relatively unknown congresswoman counts Dolores Huerta, a labor activist who directed a famous Golden State boycott of grapes in the 1970s, as a political role model. Solis credits unions with helping her immigrant parents move into the middle class and send their children to college. Her father, a Mexican immigrant, was a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and her Nicaraguan mother belonged to the United Rubber Workers. The 51-year-old lawmaker developed a statewide reputation after she spearheaded a successful 1996 initiative to raise the minimum wage. Union support helped Solis win her underdog congressional race in 2000. And since coming to Congress, she’s been a major recipient of union political donations and an all-but-certain labor vote on Capitol Hill."
