Obama may reverse Bush policies on stem cells, drilling and abortion

More religious groups supported President-elect Obama this year, than any other presidential candidate before him.

The New York Times even reported one religious group, Matthew 25 Network, going so far as to caucus for him by creating a website and placing radio ads designed especially for Christian voters.

But with the potential for Obama to reverse some controversial executive orders like a ban on ethical embryonic stem cell research and the ban on the use of public money for abortions except in certain instances, some analysis are already anticipating a change of heart in his Christian fan base.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Catholics sided with Obama 54 to 45 percent, as opposed to the 52 to 47 percent that sided with Bush in 2004.

And although Catholics are opposed to embryonic steam cell research creating and destroying human embryos, they do support adult stem cell research and overall they are in support of Obama and his stance on the matter.

On his campaign web site, Obama said that he supports the creation of new stem cells from embryos created in vitro fertilization treatments that would otherwise be discarded. In 2004, the Episcopal Church declared its support of stem cell research in line with the same views.

…As long as the embryos would have been destroyed other wise, they were not created solely for research purposes, and the embryos were not bought and sold

Gary Stern of Journal News reported that 78 percent of Jews support Obama and his policies. In a separate media outlet, it is reported that all major Jewish denominations – including the Reform, Conservative, Orthodox and Reconstructionist movements – support both embryonic and adult stem cell research as long as it is for medical or therapeutic purposes.
