MATT Honored at IME Conference
On November 16, MATT Executive Director Hope Andrade, COO Aracely Garcia-Granados and Executive Board member Virgilio Elizondo were in Mexico City to attend an IME Becas conference, at which MATT.org was applauded for being the voice of reason in the immigration debate. The crowd gave a standing ovation as Hope Andrade accepted an award in recognition of MATT.org’s “invaluable work on behalf of the Mexican community that resides in the United States.”
IME is dedicated to improving the lives of Mexicans living in the U.S. and other countries through education and support services, a cause MATT has supported through a $100,000 contribution to the organization. Garcia-Granados and Father Elizondo participated in a panel discussion on immigration, and along with questions came enthusiastic support. Father Elizondo stressed concern over the post-9/11 ideology of fear that has seized America, a consequence of which has been fear over “the Mexicanization” of the country. He instead encouraged others to be calm, rational, and think with their hearts instead of with fear. At his speech to the IME Consejeros gathered at this conference, President Calderon’s stressed his commitment to improving the image of Mexicans in the U.S., an effort which MATT is spearheading.
