Recent legislation that takes away opportunities for all students to attend college regardless of their legal status could result in a worker shortage with effects felt across the state. A study conducted by the North Carolina Center for Public Policy Research projected that there will be a massive wave of people retiring in the coming years leading to a great worker shortage. The study proposes that one way to fill that shortage would be through providing greater opportunities for all students to attend community colleges. The study argues that recent decisions made to disallow undocumented students from attending community colleges will lead to enormous consequences for North Carolina’s economy in the near future.
