What is microlending????
You may have heard the terms 'microlending' or 'microfinance', but you may still be wondering what they mean in the real world.
Student Voices by MATT.org spent a few days outside of Monterrey, Mexico with microlending greats ADMIC and Kiva to get you a firsthand look at what microlending means to the working poor. We'll be posting a great video with interviews from Kiva and Admic staff as well as some of Mexico's most endearing small business owners soon.
But first, here is a peek at Kiva.org and their work (in this story, in Uganda). Kiva lets YOU be a part of the microlending phenomenon. (Yes, it's really a phenomenon, which means you better get take advantage of this free crash-course we're providing!)

Crossing the border in search of cheap gas?
A new type of tourism is emerging along the US/Mexico border - gas tourism.
Gas tourists cross the border into Mexico to fill up their tanks for irresistably low-priced gasoline - prices in El Paso, Texas are in line with the U.S. norm of $4 per gallon while just across the border in Cuidad Juarez, you can fill up for $2.66 per gallon.
These gas tourists face long lines at the border and potential danger in some rougher parts of the bordertowns, but they seem willing to take risks for such significant savings.
What about you - what would you do, how far would you travel, for cheaper gas?
Read the full article in the International Herald Tribute at: http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/06/25/america/25gas.php?page=1

Will YOU boycott CNN?
The Hispanic Institute is proposing a boycott of CNN due to what they call "ongoing distortion of facts surrounding U.S. immigration issues, especially in commentaries and reports on 'Lou Dobbs Tonight.' "
The considerable size, growth rate, and purchasing power of the Hispanic population makes this a potentially huge boycott - what do you think?
Watch the video here and tell us what you think:
Is CNN biased? Is Lou Dobbs out of control?
Will you boycott CNN?

Juanes speaks out on politics of Immigration, economy
Reuters and the New York Times report here that Latin rocker Juanes is speaking out about immigration and politics - encouraging fans to speak out and even working with Rock the Vote. Some compare him to Bono as a socially-conscious musician, citing Juanes' position on Time magazines list of "One of the 100 Most Influential People in the World".

Human interest and Ethics in legal issues
In the article, "Immigrant prostitutes: victims or criminals?", the following ethical question is raised by Chief Charlie T. Deane, "I think we just have to step back from all these cases and say, 'What are we trying to achieve?' Our philosophy, the overall goal, is to protect crime victims regardless of immigration status."
I think this is somewhat similar to the question raised in the following April 2007 interview between Bill O'Reilly and Geraldo Rivera regarding the media making a raucus over a drunk driving death involving an illegal immigrant in order to make what Geraldo calls "a cheap political move" by capitalizing on a tragedy.
In really tragic situations involving human suffering, where does the law fall? I am not sure we'll find a clear cut answer, but I think this is a hugely important and complex legal and moral issue.
