Crossing the border in search of cheap gas?
A new type of tourism is emerging along the US/Mexico border - gas tourism.
Gas tourists cross the border into Mexico to fill up their tanks for irresistably low-priced gasoline - prices in El Paso, Texas are in line with the U.S. norm of $4 per gallon while just across the border in Cuidad Juarez, you can fill up for $2.66 per gallon.
These gas tourists face long lines at the border and potential danger in some rougher parts of the bordertowns, but they seem willing to take risks for such significant savings.
What about you - what would you do, how far would you travel, for cheaper gas?

!México Te Regala Gasolina! ...

Visas for Fashion Models?

"Tall, thin and beautiful foreigners could get their own visa category under legislation moving on Capitol Hill."
New York Representative Anthony Weiner is promoting legislation that would create a special visa for fashion models. Up to 1000 models a year would be able to come to the country temporarily. This seperate category would resolve the current shortage of models that Weiner seems to be very concerned about. He claims that models need their own visa category to prevent them from having to compete with high tech foreign workers such as doctors and engineers.
What do you think of Representative Weiner's proposal?
How should visa categories be prioritized?

Will YOU boycott CNN?
The Hispanic Institute is proposing a boycott of CNN due to what they call "ongoing distortion of facts surrounding U.S. immigration issues, especially in commentaries and reports on 'Lou Dobbs Tonight.' "
The considerable size, growth rate, and purchasing power of the Hispanic population makes this a potentially huge boycott - what do you think?
Watch the video here and tell us what you think:
Is CNN biased? Is Lou Dobbs out of control?
Will you boycott CNN?

What can YOU do to end the "atmosphere of violence" that many domestic workers endure?

A recent article in the New York Times details the horrific stories of abuse told by women, often immigrants, who labor as domestic workers. Domestic workers gathered recently to rally and protest these abuses.
Why do you think these kinds of abuses can still happen in the United States in this modern age?
What can be done to prevent mistreatment of domestic workers, especially immigrant women who feel that they have no way to defend themselves?

The Great Immigration Panic
What is the true cost of the war on immigration? A compelling editorial was published in The New York Times on June 3, 2008.
"A nation of immigrants is holding another nation of immigrants in bondage, exploiting its labor while ignoring its suffering, condemning its lawlessness while sealing off a path to living lawfully. The evidence is all around that something pragmatic and welcoming at the American core has been eclipsed, or is slipping away."
A study recently done by Media Matters highlights how the mainstream media is promoting the current situation the above article describes and also the fears that many Americans have towards immigrants.
"When it comes to immigration, cable news overflows not just with vitriolic rhetoric, but also with a series of myths that feed viewers' resentment and fears, fostering hostility toward immigrants."
